THE plan for a circular safe harbour on the Geelong waterfront now rests with the Federal Government after the state promised $4 million for the project yesterday.
The commitment allowed the Royal Geelong Yacht Club to finalise its submission for a contribution from the National Stronger Regions Fund yesterday afternoon, just hours before grant applications closed.
The yacht club plan would open its precinct to the public, and include construction of a 288m curved wave attenuator.
With $10 million confirmed for the project — $3 million of its own money, $3 million from the City of Greater Geelong and $4 million from the state — the yacht club has applied to the fund for $9 million for the $19 million first stage of the project.
A $12 million second stage would be bankrolled solely by the yacht club.
The Federal Government is expected to announce in July if that application was successful.
